Tipping

It is customary to tip many categories of service staff in South Africa. For restaurant waiters, the norm is about 10-15% of the bill − assuming the service was satisfactory. Hotel and lodge porters normally gets R 10.00 per suitcase if they help to carry these around.  This is $ 0.70 cents or €0.60 cents per case.  Safari guides, site guides and other staff are usually tipped too if they rendered any kind of service, but your tour guide will assist you to know who and what to tip.  When refuelling our motorcycles, we also give the fuel assistant R 5.00 per fill.  This is around $ 0.35 or €0.30.  Remember that we experience high levels of unemployment in SA and to create jobs, many companies employ unskilled labour at low wages to give work to as many as possible.
