If there is a broken white line in the centre of the road – that is, to your immediate right − it is legal to overtake another vehicle, if it is safe to do so. If there is a solid white line in the centre of the road, with a broken white line to its left – that is to your immediate right, or between you and the solid line − then it is also legal to overtake a vehicle. You can cross a broken white line as long as it is on your side of the solid line. To put it another way, you may cross a broken white line if it favours you. However, if there is no broken white line at all, but only a solid white line in the centre of the road, it is illegal to overtake. If there is a solid white line in the centre of the road with a broken white line to the right of the solid white line – that is, on the other side of the solid line from your point of view − then it is also illegal to overtake. A broken white line is your friend and a solid white line your foe.
