What about alcohol?

The South African authorities have a zero-tolerance approach to drinking and driving. We therefore advise participants not to consume any alcohol on the days we ride until we reach our destination and have finished our riding for the day. We know that in some cultures it is acceptable to take a beer or glass of wine over lunch, but here it would be better to leave that until you’ve reached the accommodation venue.  The legal alcohol limit for road users in SA won’t even safely cover a beer or glass of wine over lunch. If you’re involved in an accident and the police or insurance company finds out you have consumed alcohol, you will be in trouble.  The police will arrest you and the insurance claim will be repudiated.  Then things get’s complicated and costly. Our advice to riders is to stay away from alcohol during the day, and to reward themselves once they reach their overnight stop with a glass or two followed by a good night’s sleep.
