By now you know that we have a Back up vehicle on selected tours and for others we make use of panniers and top cases for our personal luggage. Our guided Grand Tour enjoys the luxury of a Back up vehicle. This tour starts up in the north and ends in Cape town 14 days later. Our shorter Garden Route Tours starts and ends in Cape Town and here we normally do not include a vehicle. This helps to manage the price and keep the tour affordable. If we have a Back up vehicle on tour with us it serves as luggage transport and as a mechanical back up unit should anything go wrong with a motorcycle. Although we use the term “truck”, the vehicle is a standard pick-up truck with limited seating space in case we need to transport one or two passengers for whatever reason. Because of the “double cab” seating function, we do not have all the space in the world one would like to have. We thus request riders and pillions joining the tours, where we have the support truck/ back up service, to be mindful of the type and quantity of bags they bring on tour. We need to limit riders and pillions to one bag per person. The best type of travel bag/case to use is soft bags, some call them duffel bags. Often riders use the “wheelie bags” with a hard underbelly and soft sides/uppers – these are best because they are easy to pack and settles in nicely. Our support drivers are excellent at playing Tetris because finding the perfect place for each bag is a challenge and once you have it, you got to memorize it for tomorrow.
